Is SEO dead?
What AI search changes.

SEO is still relevant to AI search. Google’s guidance keeps useful content, crawlability, and a good website experience at the center. For a business, the practical work is to explain its services clearly, show evidence, and make the path to an inquiry work.

Editorial update: this article replaces the original “SEO is dead” framing with current source-based guidance. The original URL and publication date are retained.

What has actually changed?

Search can now present a synthesized answer alongside links to sources. A visitor may ask a longer question, compare several possibilities in one request, or follow up without starting over. That makes clear explanations of services, relevant examples, and meaningful differences useful to the person making a decision.

It does not mean that a website becomes invisible because it was built before a particular year. Nor does it mean that every search now ends in one paragraph. Avoid using a dramatic headline as a reason to discard pages that are still useful to customers.

For a business owner, the practical question remains recognizable: can the right person find enough trustworthy information to decide whether to contact you? Search presentation is changing, but that decision still needs substance.

What does Google actually recommend?

Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI search says SEO remains relevant. It emphasizes useful, distinctive content, clear technical structure, and a good experience for visitors. Creating more pages is not inherently an improvement.

Its AI features documentation also says there is no special schema needed. Structured data should match the visible page. A page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet to qualify as a supporting link, and meeting the requirements does not guarantee inclusion.

Use that guidance to examine the actual website. Can a visitor understand the services without decoding vague slogans? Do related pages link to one another? Can someone on a phone read the content and reach a working next step? Those are useful questions even when an AI answer never appears.

What should you check for ChatGPT search?

OpenAI’s crawler documentation separates search from model training. OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT search. GPTBot concerns training. OpenAI recommends allowing the search crawler in robots.txt and permitting requests from its published IP ranges.

That is an access check, not a ranking promise. A crawler reaching a page does not establish that an answer will cite it. Similarly, the name of a site builder is not enough to determine whether its output is accessible. Inspect the actual published content and access rules.

For WTM, public service pages are delivered as HTML. The content can be read without waiting for an interactive visual to initialize. That is a useful separation between the experience people see and the information a page needs to communicate.

What makes a case study worth reading?

Specific evidence helps a prospective client understand what happened. The important details are the original situation, the work, the period measured, and what the numbers actually represent. A large percentage without that context asks the reader to supply the missing story.

Our Northside Dental case study uses client-reported counts: 57 new patients for August compared with a prior monthly average of 47. That is 10 additional new patients, or approximately 21.3%. The month-one presentation uses a conservative 20% headline.

Those figures do not establish that every additional patient came from organic search or that the same increase will repeat each month. The useful evidence is the reported change and its timeframe. Broader claims need their own evidence.

This approach applies beyond numbers. Show actual work and describe its status. An app in development can demonstrate interface decisions without being presented as a launched product. A website can show the experience delivered without inventing a revenue result.

Which pages deserve to exist?

Begin with the questions a buyer needs answered before contacting you. What do you build? Who is the service for? What does the engagement involve? Can they see relevant work? What information is needed to discuss scope?

For WTM, a dedicated app-development page has a distinct job from our website page. It explains product strategy, interface design, and app scope. Our redesign page addresses a different situation again: replacing an existing site while considering its content, URLs, and inquiry paths.

That is different from duplicating a service page for every variation of a phrase. Google’s spam policies warn against large amounts of low-value content created to manipulate rankings. They also address publishing third-party content mainly to exploit a host site’s established ranking signals.

Outside coverage can still be useful when it has an editorial reason to exist. A relevant project feature, accurate business profile, or independent review gives a reader context. The objective should be useful information and a real reputation, rather than a shortcut to borrowed authority.

How should you measure progress?

Separate four stages: a page is published, a search engine can access it, the page appears in results, and a prospective customer takes a useful action. Passing one stage does not prove the next. A successful deployment is not a new customer.

Search Console can help show impressions, clicks, and the queries and pages involved. Review inquiry quality alongside traffic. A visitor looking for a service you no longer offer is different from someone evaluating the work you want to win.

When content changes, record what changed and when. Review patterns over time instead of interpreting one query or one AI answer as a stable ranking. Update material when facts or the business change; a fresh date alone is not new evidence. Google’s helpful-content guidance explicitly cautions against changing dates merely to appear fresh.

WTM provides SEO and AI search audits and AI SEO services nationwide. Start with the site, the services it should attract inquiries for, and the gaps supported by evidence. The work should make the business easier to understand and evaluate.

Before we begin

A few good questions.

Is SEO dead because of AI search?

No. Google says its SEO best practices remain relevant to generative AI features in Search. AI answers change how information is presented, but useful content and technical search foundations still matter.

Does a website need special AI schema?

Google says there is no special schema required for its AI search features. Structured data should accurately describe the visible content. Adding markup does not guarantee indexing, ranking, or citation.

Should I publish hundreds of pages to appear in AI answers?

Only create pages that serve a distinct, useful purpose for your audience. Google warns against scaled content created primarily to manipulate rankings or generative AI responses. Repeating a page with different keywords is not a substitute for useful information.

Does allowing GPTBot enable ChatGPT search?

OpenAI distinguishes GPTBot, which relates to model training, from OAI-SearchBot, which is used for search. Its documentation recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot and requests from its published IP ranges for search visibility.
